Germany's biggest airline, Lufthansa, was forced to cancel nearly 1,700 flights on Monday, April 22, 2013, following a planned the work strike by thousands of employees who demanding higher wages. Most of the route is to be canceled domestic routes and short-haul flights to Europe.

As quoted by Reuters on Sunday, April 21, 2013, one of the protesters, Verdi, which represents the airline's 33,000 staff, announced the work strike on Friday to pressure the airline management in order to improve the welfare of employees.

The union also claimed that the airline's bid by Lufthansa in the previous meeting on Wednesday is a scandal. "Although Lufthansa bid in the last round of negotiations, although talks were constructive and open to further talks, Verdi once again have hijacked our customers in a pay dispute," said Stefan Lauer.

Lauer is a member of the executive board of Lufthansa in the field of resources and lead the conversation about salary even though he will resign at the end of June.
