Ministry of Transport of the Republic of Indonesia has programmed Leo Wattimena Airport located in the regency of the island of Morotai, North Maluku, into an international airport to support the development of the area as a tourism destination and special economic zones.

Head of Transport Department of Telecommunications and Information Technology of North Maluku province, Taufik Madjid, said in Ternate, Tuesday, April 30, 2013, Morotai has the potential of tourism is very interesting, especially of marine tourism and historical relics of World War II. Therefore, the development of Leo Wattimena Airport into an international airport is expected to encourage airlines to open up international routes to and from the airport, which in turn will boost tourist arrivals to Morotai. "Determination of Morotai as a special economic zone will encourage investors from within the country and abroad to invest in Morotai. Developing Leo Wattimena airport into an international airport is a necessity," he said.

Ministry of Transportation in 2012 has been allocated a budget of more than Rp 20 billion for improvement Leo Wattimena Airport, including increasing the length of runway that had landed wide-bodied aircraft and to update the navigation facilities at the airport. Taufik Madjid said, the Ministry of Transportation will continue to fix Leot Wattimena Airport, including the construction of a passenger terminal as well as various other facilities in accordance with the standards of the international airport.

Ministry of Transportation are still not giving certainty when Leo Wattimena Airport in Morotai designated as an international airport, but the North Maluku provincial government has proposed that the determination could be made as soon as possible, as the initial stageis is to formalize the airport as the airport of haji embarkation.
